When Duo Security, an Ann Arbor, Mich.-based cybersecurity startup, opened its initial office in Austin about a year and a half ago, they quickly learned Austin has a killer tech talent pipeline.

Jon Oberheide, Duo Security co-founder and CTO, told me the startup’s hiring managers said Austin’s talent pool was unlike anything they’d seen.

“Strongest pipeline, strongest candidates, we want to hire all of them,” he said during a visit to the company’s new downtown office this week. “So it’s kind of an eye-opening moment for a lot of our leaders down here. That’s why the company kind of exploded like it did down here.”

Duo’s first office, opened in June 2016, was downtown near 5th and Brazos. But Oberheide said it was decidedly grittier, with a conference room that was more like a closet. Since then, the startup has grown from 30 to 90 employees.

On Monday, the startup moved into new offices in the Bosche-Hogg Building on Congress Avenue near 8th Street. It increased their space threefold to 23,400 square feet.

Duo Security, now valued $1.17 billion, is headquartered in Ann Arbor, and it has offices in San Mateo, Calif. and London. But Austin has become its fastest-growing location.

Several big cybersecurity companies have offices in Austin, including Cisco, Dell secureWorks, Rapid7 and others. Oberheide said he hopes Duo Security can help pull everyone together, which could help in recruiting more security talent and funding to Austin.

“There’s a smattering of companies with offices here, but there’s not kind of a single center of gravity for the security community,” he said. “That was one of the things that was attractive to us about Austin is that Duo can be that kind of center of gravity.”
