Venture capital deals were up in 2012 from the previous year, according to data released today from CB Insights, but dollars were down over the same period. Q3 deal activity was the highest since the dot com era, peaking in October. As CB Insights summarizes:
With explosion of seed funding, 2012 easily hits a post-recessionary deal activity high. Funding slips 7.5% from 2011 but still remains up 36% versus 2009. An absence of mega-deals which often came in the clean tech sector hurt aggregate funding levels.
In Massachusetts, the year started slowly but ended on a high note in terms of deal activity, but down from the previous year in dollars. Whereas seed investment peaked in Q3 nationally, in the Commonwealth, seed activity hit its high in Q4.
