This year marks the eleven year anniversary of the tragic terrorist attacks on 9/11, and the victims of the attacks will be remembered across the nation and here in the city of Boston, as well. On Tuesday, the 9/11 anniversary, Boston will remember the two planes that flew out of Logan that fateful morning and the millions of lives forever changed that day. Here are just a handful of the events taking place in Boston on the 11th anniversary to honor those we lost on 9/11.
9/11 Anniversary Events in Boston
Day of Remembrance Blood Drive — 6 a.m. – 12 p.m. at Fenway Park, Gate D & 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Faneuil Hall Marketplace, Quincy Market, Upper Rotunda — The American Red Cross will host a blood drive in honor of those that lost their lives on 9/11. All donors will receive a Red Sox goodie bag, commemorative t-shirt, souvenir and a chance to win Red Sox tickets.
9/11 Wreath-Laying Ceremony – 7:30 a.m. — Boston Public Garden — On Tuesday, September 11 at 7:30 a.m., the Massachusetts 9/11 Fund will host a wreath laying ceremony at the Public Garden’s 9/11 Memorial, the Garden of Remembrance.
Flag Lowering, Moment of Silence & Reading of Names – 8:30 a.m. — Massachusetts State House lawn — Following the wreath-laying ceremony there will be a public flag-lowering ceremony at the Massachusetts State House, as well as a moment of silence for those who lost their lives on 9/11. Additionally, there will be a reading of the names of the 206 Massachusetts residents who were victims of the attacks 11 years ago.
Commemoration Observation & Annual Madeline Amy Sweeney Award Presentation — 9:30 a.m. — Massachusetts State House — Madeline Amy Sweeney was a flight attendant on American Airlines Flight 11, which was hijacked and crashed into the World Trade Center on 9/11. She is infamously quoted as telling an American Airlines employee via phone before impact: “I see water. I see buildings. I see buildings! We are flying low. We are flying very, very low. We are flying way too low. Oh my God we are flying way too low. Oh my God!” An award in her name will be presented for Civilian Bravery on 9/11. The presentation is invite-only.
9/11 Day of Service — 11 a.m. — 2 p.m. — Rose Kennedy Greenway — The Massachusetts Military Heroes Fund will be assembling 1,000 care packages on the Rose Kennedy Greenway, between State St. and Milk St., today to support active duty service members and will be hosting a pledge drive to support local bereaved military families.
Family Reception — 11 a.m. — The Ritz-Carlton — The Massachusetts 9/11 Fund will host a reception for the families of victims at the Ritz-Carlton on Tuesday morning. This event is invite-only as well.
Annual Massachusetts Fallen Firefighters Memorial Ceremony — 6 p.m. — Ashburton Park, Massachusetts State House — The Massachusetts Fallen Firefighters Memorial will honor firefighters who died in the line of duty.
