As the warm sun continues to shine down on the Hub, it gives me great pleasure that I can say it’s finally spring farmers market season in Boston! With the return of SoWa Open Market earlier this month, as well as the opening of Copley Square and Government Center farmers markets this week, the season is in full swing.
To help navigate the fresh deliciousness, one local has drummed up a website — bosfarmers.com — that allows users to find the nearest farmers markets in a matter of seconds.
“I was out and about and wondered which farmers markets might be near me and open,” creator Dustin Masterson says of his inspiration for the web app. “The sites that existed for this information were not very user friendly and not mobile friendly at all.”
“Being unemployed, I figured that making an alternative could be a fun project and a good way to boost up a portfolio for finding a job,” he adds.
Luckily for us, it’s also a good way to find fresh produce and delicious vendors with the click of a button. The site lists 56 markets in the Boston area, including Cambridge, Somerville, Dorchester, Medford and more, organized by day of the week.
For example, on Wednesday, the app names just one farmers market that is currently open, but indicates the opening dates of four more that will eventually be open on Wednesdays.
From there, you can click on the individual markets for location maps and hours.
“I think the next improvement would be to make a listing of all markets organized by city,” says Masterson of where he plans to take the site. “I’ve also reserved the Twitter username @bosfarmers, which would be a great place to make a Twitter bot that tweeted out real time alerts as farmers markets are opening.”
For now, it’s worth bookmarking the web app and checking it every time you pop out for lunch or on your way home from work — the nearest markets are often closer than you think!
