Have you had lots of dropped calls lately? Well, it may be time to switch to AT&T. According to a new study from RootMetics, AT&T is the best cellphone provider in Boston.

AT&T secured top spots in data performance, text performance and combined performance, and tied with Verizon in the call performance category.

Some notable points include:

  • AT&T’s average download speed increased from 9.6 Mbps to 21.0 Mbps since the last testing period.
  • AT&T provided the most reliable network in Boston, recording an overall network success rate of 98.0%.
  • AT&T and Verizon delivered the strongest call performances in Boston: each carrier recorded an average failure rate of just 0.6%.
  • AT&T outperformed the other carriers by delivering 89.1% of their texts faster than 10 seconds.

Now, as an AT&T user, I would like to report some discrepancies with these findings. First, have you been inside my apartment, RootMetrics? Did you notice that there is only one corner you can stand in, facing North, in which calls don’t drop? Also, have you been to the laundromat down the street from my house, in which no texts can be sent or received?  Have you noticed how long it takes to download a photo while waiting in line at the local Whole Foods? Perhaps you should re-conduct your study, RootMetrics.

To determine their findings, RootMetrics ran 65,204 call, data, and text tests at all hours of the day and night on Android-based smartphones. The tests were performed at 111 indoor locations and outdoors, while driving a total of 3,009 miles. The testing was conducted from October 18 to October 25, 2012.
