The Catalans were hurt early in the match when Gerard Pique hobbled off the field in the 12th minute, but Cristian Tello put the Catalans ahead in the 15th minute.

Barcelona were felled by bad luck 15 minutes later as Dani Alves misdirected a cross from Emmanuel Emenike. They were then stunned in the 59th when Romulo put Spartak ahead.

Lionel Messi came to the rescue yet again, though, touching in a pass from Tello in the 71st minute and heading in Alexis’ cross in the 80th for the win.

Messi’s goals today were his fourth double of the year, and his 9th and 10th goals on the season.

‘To talk about Messi is to talk about excellence in football,” said Spartak coach Unai Emery, who is yet to top Barcelona in 13 games with three different teams: Almeria, Valencia and now Spartak. ”It is very tough to stop him.”

”We wanted to have the ball to defuse Barcelona’s pressure, and we were able to do so during spells, but Barcelona can break open the game in a matter of a couple of minutes.”

Barcelona striker Tello praised Spartak’s strategy.

‘We weren’t expecting Emery’s game plan,” Tello said. ”It surprised me a lot. They caused us a lot of problems.”

By winning today Barcelona advanced to a 17 game unbeaten streak at home in European play.
