Billerica-based Playrific will be joining the likes of Cut the Rope, Where’s My Water and Temple Run as one of the select mobile apps that will come pre-loaded on the Toys “R” Us’ new tablet for kids, the tabeo e2. The tablet will be released later this month and will be sold exclusively at Toy “R” Us stores.
Designed for children ages two through twelve, the new tablet prioritizes online safety and will allow kids to explore a range of parent and educator-approved digital content.
The Playrific app is packed with videos, games, interactive books, songs, drawing and coloring apps that will be playable right out of the box. The content will be refreshed dynamically using an algorithm to compare each child’s usage to those with similar profiles.
“We are excited about partnering with Toys “R” Us because of our mutual understanding of, and focus on, providing kids with what they want in a safe digital environment,” said Beth Marcus, Playrific founder and CEO, in the press release. “tabeo e2 provides users with a high-quality out-of-box experience and we are thrilled to be included amongst a handful of great apps selected to be pre-loaded on the device.”
Marcus, an alumna of MIT, has 30 patents to her credit, and was featured on our list of Boston’s 71 Female Entrepreneurs last year. She sold her first startup, which developed the SideWinder joystick, to Microsoft in 1996. In 2010, she founded Playrific and developed a patent-pending Mobilize Your Content™ publishing platform that provides businesses and brands with a quick and economical way to launch special-purpose apps tailored to children. Playrific’s partnerships include Nickelodeon, Sesame Street and Barbie, with Disney joining shortly.
“We will be releasing our entire suite of Playrific apps to the tabeo store once Toys “R” Us launches the store to the public later this month,” Marcus told Bostinno, “We currently offer 12 apps on iOS and Kindle and look forward to adding them to the tabeo ecosystem. We’ll also be releasing two apps in partnership with well-known children’s brands in the coming weeks. Stay tuned.”
