We’ve all done it. Stepped on the escalator or elevator in order to avoid the most basic of workouts, the stairs. We’re tired, it’s early, the excuses for avoiding the climb are endless. But as we veer toward the easier mode of transit, our bodies lose the benefits of this heart-pumping activity. It’s this simple movement that could whittle your middle while decreasing your risk to America’s No. 1 killer: heart disease.

On Sunday, more than 1,000 people from across the Boston community will come together to climb 38 flights of stairs. No, this isn’t a fitness induced flash mob — it’s goals are much grander. The event is called ClimbAmerica! and is hosted by the organization, ClimbCorps, under one of Boston’s premiere hospitals, Brigham and Women’s.

Did I mention it’s being held at the one of Boston’s tallest buildings? Exchange Place in the Financial District is a whopping 510 feet tall. Start lacing up those sneakers.

According to their mission statement, “ClimbCorps is the nation’s first service corps dedicated to preventing heart disease and improving the health and wellbeing of the American public.” And they do a fantastic job! In addition to ClimbAmerica!, this multi-dimensional outreach program offers monthly community programs that are free to the public. Knowledge is power, so raising awareness is critical. They also distribute an electronic newsletter which covers everything from safety tips to healthy recipes.

If you do plan to join the masses this weekend, here’s what you can expect:

This is a public event and anyone over the age of 11 is welcome to participate. The event is set up much like a road race; climbers wear bibs, water stations are available and everyone is encouraged to go at their own pace. You can choose to join in as an individual or be part of a team. Whichever you decide, there’s bound to be people cheering you on all the way up. At the finish,  post-trek celebrations will ensue with free snacks and health information.

Perhaps you’ve already made plans this weekend. If so, ClimbCorps makes it easy for you to donate directly, as they state that “all funds raised through ClimbAmerica! will support education, programming, and research to help prevent heart disease and promote better health.” Keep in mind it’s always important to make time for your ticker. Whether that’s a brisk walk or gym sesh, the purpose is to get moving!

I’ll leave you with this alarming fact courtesy of the Center for Disease Control: “Every year about 715,000 Americans have a heart attack.” Stairs aren’t looking so bad now, are they?

If you go: 53 State Street, Exchange Place in Boston; 9-11 a.m.; ClimbAmerica! is free to attend, and you can also register the day of from 8-9 a.m.
