Hallelujah! Today is National Cheeseburger Day, in case you didn’t already know. As you definitely already know, cheeseburgers are a handheld ticket to happiness, when done correctly. Sure, the last time you went to McDonald’s at 1 a.m., your slice of cheese was half-unmelted and the burger was as smooshed as if someone just sat on it. (Let’s hope that someone didn’t actually sit on it.) In light of that sad excuse for a cheeseburger, you owe yourself the real deal on this holy day dedicated to all that is cheesy, meaty and deliciously toasty.

So let’s cut to the important stuff, as in the, the free stuff. As we mentioned yesterday, King’s Back Bay is offering up one free cheeseburger to bowlers and patty enthusiasts alike, today from noon to 10 p.m. The burgers are smothered in cheese and a special sauce, and then topped with lettuce and tomato before you devour them—not a shabby deal at all.

And over at The Tap on Union Street, they’re offering up free cheeseburgers from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. as well. All you have to do is purchase a Sam Adams brew for $5, and the free burger is yours. I mean, you were going to need something to wash it all down with, anyway.

Of course, if it’s free it’s for me, as the saying goes. But if you want to know that you’re getting a carefully-made-just-for-you cheeseburger today, you won’t want to flock to one of the locations sending free cheeseburgers flying—you’re going to have to pay for it. Luckily for you, Boston boasts plenty of drool-worthy burger options: click through the slideshow below for the best spots to get yo’ cheeseburger on today in the city.
