Whether you played little league as a kid or were shuttled to dance recitals, at some point most of us grew up and lost time for these fitness-based hobbies. We accepted full-time jobs and put our dreams of becoming a professional athlete on the back burner. Well, if you perfected pirouettes as a kid, all hope is not lost.
Enter DanceWorks Boston. This organization is the city’s largest performance-based dance organization for post-college grads. And if you’re sticking around the Hub this weekend, there are four opportunities for you to check out these incredibly skilled young professionals.
What can you expect from these performances? I had the opportunity to speak with founder and executive director Lisa Mara about this upcoming weekend:
The two hour production features 25 original works that blend high-energy hip-hop, jazz, contemporary and tap into a show that is anything but a typical dance recital. With a mix of Top 40 beats, Adele ballads, and throwback jams, the DanceWorks Boston Project is more reminiscent of So You Think You Can Dance than your niece’s dance recital.
And this community of more than 135 dancers isn’t just limited to Boston. DanceWorks, which Mara founded in 2010, also has a sister-company located in NYC. Aside from her duties as a founder, Mara choreographs and dances with the company.
“Our company’s mission is driven by community — it’s our number one core value, even before dance! Each dancer must know they names of all their fellow dancers. It helps cultivate friendships, stronger performances, and overall more enjoyable rehearsals,” Mara states.
When they’re not dancing, these performers have full-time careers and are working professionals. As their release states, “We have talented alumni from colleges and universities across the country who want to pursue their passion beyond the ‘cube-world,’ just as you would with any sport you grew up playing.”
This inspiring community is definitely one that has potential when it comes to branching out to other cities. But as Mara tell us,
Right now my focus is on building Boston and NYC as strong as they can be within their respective communities. We’ve hit many of my initial business goals in only four years of operation so plans for expansion are always on my mind and probably not so far off. In a perfect world, if would be DanceWorks World Takeover! Can that be a hashtag?! #DWBlove #worldtakeover
