According to U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz’s office, Dr. Richard Keller, a pediatric endocrinologist, was charged in court with receipt of child pornography.
Officials said the 56-year-old doctor from Andover was arrested for allegedly knowingly receiving the films, which depicted minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct.
According to court documents, Keller bought more than 50 DVDs of child pornography online.
“At this time, more than 500 photographs and between 60 and 100 DVDs have been recovered during an ongoing search of Dr. Keller’s home,” according to a statement from prosecutors.
Besides his role at Children’s Hospital, Keller is also a pediatrics instructor at Harvard Medical School, prosecutors said.
Representatives from the hospital said in a statement Thursday that no complaints or concerns have been expressed by any patients or family members about the care Keller provided while he was at Children’s.
“Providing safe and appropriate care in a safe and protective environment is the absolute paramount priority for Boston Children’s Hospital,” said Rob Graham, National Strategy and Media Relations Manager.
When the hospital learned of the allegations, Keller was immediately put on administrative leave pending results of the investigation by the US Attorney’s Office.
“We will cooperate fully with the US Attorney’s Office and all other involved regulatory and legal authorities,” representatives from the hospital told BostInno.
According to the U.S.Attorney’s office the sweep of Keller’s apartment was part of “Project Safe Childhood,” a nationwide initiative designed to protect children from exploitation and abuse.
If convicted, Keller faces up to 20 years in prison, to be followed by up to a lifetime supervised release and a $250,000 fine.
