On Saturday the Rose Kennedy Greenway will be transformed from an innovative, park space to a two-day long interactive public art venue. For the fifth year in a row, FIGMENT Boston will bring together artists, performers and participants of all ages to embrace and enjoy all types of art.

FIGMENT traces its roots back to New York City’s Governors Island in 2007, when a slew of inspired art enthusiasts descended upon the small hunk of New York Harbor land to participate in a variety of imaginative projects. Since then, FIGMENT has planted roots in cities ranging from Boston down to Jackson, Miss., up to Toronto and as far away as Geelong, Australia.

Even better is that FIGMENT Boston is free to all and, for those more inclined to burning the midnight oil, FIGMENT After Dark in Dewey Square will take place on Saturday night from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. and feature a live D.J. spinning hot beats, dancing, fire spinners and “spontaneous roving performances as well as some special installation art perfect for nighttime,” according to FIGMENT Boston.

As you’re surely salivating over this awesome event, allow me to give you just a taste of what you’ll be experiencing.

There will be the AutoSub Dome, a collaborative 3-D mural comprised of segments painted by residents, locals, tourists and anyone who wishes to join in the fun that are then stretched across the dome for everyone to take in.

The Real Time Art Show, billed as “an experiment in social photography” on its website, is a real-time photo shoot that results in a printed gallery displaying snapshots of an entire event or extended period of time. Those who engage with FIGMENT are urged to participate as photographers, subjects of photography, and curators of photographs.

FIGMENT After Dark will also display some art along with its bumping tunes. The Greenway has already announced its plans to exhibit some billowing, aerial art and one display during FIGMENT After Dark will build on this notion. Inspired by an exploration of currents, Waterlily Sky these interactive showcases are handcrafted waterlilies constructed from corrugated plastic, rivets, fishing line, diffusers, steel and LED lights that exemplify the jouncing calmness of the wind.

Sounds tempting, doesn’t it? Here’s the deal. FIGMENT Boston is taking place on the Greenway starting Saturday, July 26, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and lasting through Sunday, July 27, from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Don’t forget to check out FIGMENT After Dark if you’re looking to get rowdy.
