If you’re looking for a free flu shot in Boston, you better act fast. Seeing how there have been more than 700 reported cases of the flu already this season–a ten-fold increase compared to all of last year–it’s no wonder that people are flocking to local pharmacies and health clinics in droves to get a flu shot. And after yesterday’s announcement that Mayor Tom Menino has declared a public health emergency based on the virus’s quickest proliferation since at least the 2009 season, well, it’s also no surprise that the shots are shooting off the shelves.
There are lots of myths about the flu, but this isn’t one of them: If you haven’t had a flu shot yet, pretty much all signs point to the fact that you’re better off braving the lines and just doing it. And while some locations in Somerville, Roslindale and elsewhere have reportedly run out, there are still plenty of free flu shots to be had in Boston.
This Saturday, January 12, Mayor Menino and the Boston Public Health Commission worked with community health centers around the city to offer the following free vaccination clinics:
8:30a North End Flu Clinic
9a Dorchester House Flu Clinic
9a Joseph Smith (Allston) Flu Clinic
9a Mattapan Flu Clinic
9a South Boston Flu Clinic
9:30a Fenway Free Walk-In Flu Clinic
10a East Boston Flu Clinic
10a Whittier Street Health Center Flu Clinic
The Public Health Commission also put together a calendar on its website detailing times and places where free flu shots can be obtained through the end of January, including several locations in Dorchester. There is more information on the influenza virus there, too, such as general facts and details about those typically affected most.
If you need something to entertain yourself while waiting in line for your flu shot–or, better yet, you need something to entertain yourself right now–I would encourage you to check out this clever article describing how the flu affects the human body dictated in terms that all Bostonians can readily understand: as it relates to the Fenway Park robbery scene in Ben Affleck’s “The Town.” Enjoy.
