Breakfast lovers of America, rejoice! Today is National Pancake Day, a holiday dedicated to celebrating fluffy flapjacks doused in syrup and topped with fruit and chocolate. In honor of this scrumptious holiday, IHOP is giving away free pancakes all day at participating locations until 10 p.m. Simply head to an IHOP location and ask for a short stack of pancakes, on the house.

In exchange for the free flapjacks, IHOP is asking that patrons make a donation to the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, which includes Children’s Hospital Boston. This year, IHOP has a goal of raising $3 million toward the cause from National Pancake Day proceeds alone.

Since National Pancake Day was started in 2006, IHOP has raised more than $10 million for non-profits and, perhaps even more impressively, has given away 14 million pancakes.

In 2012 alone, the company raised more than $3 million for charity on National Pancake Day, and handed out enough pancakes to create a stack that would be nearly 16 miles high, according to a press release. It comes as no surprise, then, that National Pancake Day 2012 was the single largest one-day event in IHOP’s 54-year history.

Can we top it this year? I think we can. After writing this article, I am craving nothing more than a buttery, melty short stack right now.

So, grab some free breakfast at IHOP until 10 p.m. this evening. After all, it’s for a very good cause!
