“Boston George” Jung, one of the most prolific cocaine dealers in the 1970s and 1980s and known best for Johnny Deppy’s portrayal of him in the 2001 movie Blow, was released from prison Monday after serving a 20-year sentence.

According to TMZ, who was on site when the 71-year old finally became a free citizen again, Jung was serving his time at The Federal Correctional Institution in Fort Dix, New Jersey, and was slated for a November release. It’s unclear at this time why he was released early.

The celebrity gossip media outlet notes further that Jung – a native of Weymouth, MA – will take up in a halfway house somewhere along the West Coast.

According to a Frontline interview with Jung back in 2000, he began his notorious drug career peddling small amounts of marijuana “innocently enough” to friends in Manhattan Beach, Calif. When an East Coast friend came out for a visit, noting that marijuana sold for exponentially higher back home, Jung kickstarted his career as a dealer.

After stints in prison and a transition from weed to cocaine, he became acquainted with infamous Medellín Cartel drug lord Pablo Escobar. Once that relationship went sour, Jung was himself busted for conspiracy in 1994. With a 60-year minimum sentence, contrary to the feature film he took a plea bargain and testified against a former accomplice for a reduced sentence.

Depp is currently working in Boston filming Black Mass, an adapted screenplay based on the criminal underground of ruthless South Boston gangster Whitey Bulger. Depp will portray Bulger, adding another credit to his list of gangster films including that of Blow and Donnie Brasco.
