Emerson College is just about ready to celebrate the grand opening of its Los Angeles campus on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, which will be the fancy new home to the college’s semester-long academic and internship program.
Beginning on March 8 with a ticketed gala (tickets have already sold out), opening celebrations will continue for a week with a series of free events for alumni, current students and their family and friends. These include building tours, a lecture by the building’s architect Thom Mayne (known for his grand, modern metal designs) and panel discussions on media and entertainment.
A host of celebrities with Emerson ties, as well as Emerson and L.A. city officials, are set to attend the gala, two years to the day the college broke ground on the $110-million-dollar project. Sofia Vergara and Larry David (whom both have children at Emerson), Maria Menounos, Jennifer Coolidge and Tom Bergeron are among the famous names slated to attend.
Emerson has offered a semester-long Los Angeles experience to its students for the past 27 years. Students take courses in their field of study and pursue internships at TV and music studios, media outlets and other Hollywood-based companies. Emerson is set to also offer in the future post-grad, certificate and professional studies programs at their new base. The new center will be spearheaded by Friends producer Kevin Bright, who was named director of the program in May.
According to a press release, the 10-story facility will include housing for up to 217 students, a live-performance space, a fitness center, screening and mixing rooms and an audio post-production suite, among other amenities. The building is a sustainable structure and hopes to receive a LEED Gold achievement to certify its high standard as a green building.
Continue on to see the new building in all its glory for yourself.
