BostInno Approved: May’s Top Tech & Startup Events in Boston

It’s May, which means the Bruins and the Celtics are gracing the playoffs and the Red Sox are in full swing. When you're not getting your yard fixed up before Memorial Day weekend, here are some can’t miss tech and startup events to fill up your spring calendar.

Week 1

Tuesday May 1

Accelerate AI Conference: This conference, which runs from May 1st to May 4th, aims to bring the top professionals in both the data science and artificial intelligence fields together. The event includes keynote speakers including Amy O’Connor, the Chief Data and Information Officer at Cloudera, and Alex Pentland, a professor from the MIT Media Lab. There are also workshops, training and breakout sessions. Ticket and location information can be found on the event website.

Wednesday May 2

Small Business Grant Information: LearnLaunch presents this event covering the different government funding and loan options for edtech small businesses. It will also talk about the importance of research and integrating it into products. This event is $25 and takes place at LearnLaunch, which is located at 281 Summer St. on the 2nd floor. The event begins at 6 p.m.

Thursday May 3

Get To It: The Capital Network and the City of Cambridge Community Development team up to bring a free afternoon of speakers and workshops covering topics such as how to pitch to investors, funding options and what resources you will need to grow. More details and a list of speakers can be found on the event’s website. The event kicks off at 3:30 p.m. and runs through 8 p.m. The event takes place at IDEO, which is located at 80 Prospect St. in Cambridge.

BostInno de Mayo: This networking event will be a great way to unwind and relax with the tech community and us from BostInno! The event is at 6 p.m. at the Lansdowne Pub, which is located at 9 Lansdowne St. Appetizers and a drink ticket are included with each ticket purchase.

Practice Makes Imperfect: This free event will focus on failure, what you can learn from it and how you can use it to your advantage without fear. This event takes place at the Intrepid Cafe, which is located at 222 Third St. #4000 in Cambridge. The event begins at 6 p.m. and food is provided.

Attract & Develop Cross-Generational Talent: Workable is hosting a fireside chat about the tools and strategies needed to attract cross-generational talent. Gabriela McManus, head of people at Drizly, will be leading the fireside chat. This event is free and takes place from 8:30 - 11:30 a.m. at Workable Inc., which is located at 33 Farnsworth St. on the fourth floor.

Saturday May 5

Girls In Tech Python Workshop: Girls In Tech Boston will be presenting a free two-day workshop on coding language Python. There will be hands-on projects and group work to help cover the basics. This event takes place from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 5th and Sunday, May 6th at District Hall, which is located at 75 Northern Ave.

She Geeks Out Job Prep Day: She Geeks Out presents an afternoon of resume reviews, interviewing tips and professional headshots. Professional makeup and hair services are available prior to headshots for an additional $5 charge. This event starts at 1 p.m. and takes place at Impact Hub, which is located at 50 Milk St. on the first floor. Tickets start at $50.

Week 2

Monday May 7

Alexa Tech Talk Networking Event: Members of the Alexa Machine Learning leadership team are hosting a chat on natural language understanding and potential Amazon employment opportunities. The event takes place at Amazon’s office located at 101 Main St. in Cambridge at 6 p.m. Check out the event’s website to see how to register.

Tuesday May 8

She Geeks Out Happy Hour: Motus is sponsoring this night of cocktails and networking with She Geeks Out at their office, which is located at 60 South St. on the 12th floor. The event starts at 6:30 p.m. and tickets are $10.

BNT #89: Boston New Technology hosts a night of demos by seven startups in the field of the internet of things and ecommerce. Food will be served, and there will be headshots and networking opportunities. Tickets are $15, but will increase closer to the event. The event takes place starting 6 p.m. at the WeWork located at 625 Massachusetts Ave. in Cambridge.

Solving the Innovation Challenge: Join Boston RegTech for their first meetup starting at 6 p.m. There will be a panel to discuss how stakeholders can better collaborate to drive better solutions to RegTech problems. This free event is located at the 200 Portland St. WeWork.

Data Visualization and Intro to Tableau: General Assembly hosts this class that will cover the basics of Tableau and data visualization. Tickets for this class are $95. This class runs from 6:30 - 9:30 p.m. and takes place at General Assembly, which is located at 125 Summer St. on the 13th floor.

Cleantech Launch Smart Clinic: This workshop will include networking, small break-out sessions, and the chance for multiple cleantech startups to perform 20-minute pitches to the audience for feedback. Teams looking to pitch need to register in advance. This event starts at 5:30 p.m. at the MIT Tang Center, which is located at 70 Memorial Dr. in Cambridge. Finding New Opportunities in the Circular Economy: This event will feature a panel on the circular economy and how startups and businesses could make sure their model will work in the circular economy. The event takes place at 5:30 p.m. at 32 Vassar St. in Cambridge. Ticket info can be found on the event’s website.

Wednesday May 9

NEVY Awards: Bristol-Myers Squibb presents the annual NEVY Awards at the House of Blues in Boston. This event will celebrate entrepreneurs, innovators and the Boston startup community. An open bar and space-themed food is also included. Tickets to this event start at $140 and the event begins at 6:30 p.m.

Greentown Labs Grand Opening: The largest cleantech incubator is hosting the grand opening of their new headquarters which are located at 444 Somerville Ave. in Somerville. Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker and Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone will be speaking. There will also be a showcase of different technologies from cleantech companies. This event is $50 and starts at 1 p.m.

PERKS Conference: This conference is focused on potential workplace perks and the  benefits employers could offer to their employees. This event features breakout roundtables about implementing these perks into various types of businesses and various class such as yoga to try out. This event runs from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. at the Hynes Convention Center. Ticket prices can be found on the event's website.

Thursday May 10

Impact of Proposed Financing: Jeremy Halpern, a partner and the Director of Business Development for the Emerging Companies Group at Nutter McClennen & Fish, hosts this workshop about proposed financing and how to build a capitalization table. Tickets for this event range from $25 - $35. This event starts at 11:30 a.m. at Nutter, McClennen & Fish, LLP, which is located at 155 Seaport Blvd.

Mass Innovation Nights #110: Mass Innovation Night’s presents this night of 10 robotic and AI product showcases. Attendees will be able to vote on their favorite product. This free event begins at 6 p.m. at the Draper's Sembler Office for Startup Engagement, which is located at 555 Technology Sq. in Cambridge.

An Evening with Ethical Startups: General Assembly presents a night of talking about ethical startups. Ricky Ashenfelter, the co-founder and CEO of Spoiler Alert, will be speaking. This free event takes place at 6:30 p.m. at General Assembly, which is located at 125 Summer St. on the 13th floor.

The Promise and Pragmatism of AI: Roy Smythe, Chief Medical Officer of Healthcare Informatics at Philips, will be giving a talk about the impact of artificial intelligence on clinical medicine. This free event starts at 5:30 p.m. at Philips Research, which is located at 2 Canal Park in Cambridge.

Week 3

Wednesday May 16

Solve at MIT: Solve at MIT, which focuses on solving the world’s biggest challenges through innovation, hosts a three-day conference that will feature workshops and speaker series, including a keynote by worldwide famous cellist Yo-Yo Ma. Festivities begin on Tuesday, May 16 at 3 p.m. and run till Friday, May 18 at 5:30 p.m. This event is for Solve members only. More details can be found on the event’s website.

MIT Technology Review’s 10 Breakthrough Technologies 2018: The MIT Technology Review Magazine presents their 10 picks of breakthrough technologies in 2018. The event, which includes cocktails and networking, takes place at 5:30 p.m at the Ragon Institute of MGH, MIT and Harvard, which is located at 400 Technology Sq. Ticket information can be found on the event’s website.

ReDev Boston: MassTLC hosts this one-day conference meant to bring together developers and technical executives. It will include different speakers including a keynote by Clara Tsao, a member of the Countering Violent Extremism Task Force at the White House. The event begins at 9:30 a.m. and takes place at the Federal Reserve in Boston, which is located at 600 Atlantic Ave. Tickets are $179 for MassTLC members and $349 for non-members.

Augmented Reality in Healthcare: Boston AR is hosting a night to speak about augmented reality opportunities in healthcare. The event is free with an optional $10 donation ticket. The event starts at 6 p.m. at Foley and Lardner LLP, which is located at 111 Huntington Ave. in suite #2500.

Tech Book Club: Join Women Who Code Boston and ezCater for a night of food, drinks and tech-related article discussions. Check back on the event’s website closer to the date to find out the article and to send questions you want to talk about during the discussion. The event starts at 6 p.m. and takes place at ezCater (101 Arch St.)

Thursday May 17

Networking Meetup: Boston Gay Software Developers host this meetup in collaboration with CIC coworking space. Pizza and drinks will be served at this free event. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. at CIC headquarters, which is located at 50 Milk St. on the 5th floor.

Small Business Expo 2018: This free all-day affair will include over 25 workshops, speakers, and networking opportunities for the small business community. This event starts at 9 a.m. and takes place at the Hynes Convention Center, which is located at 900 Boylston St.

Week 4

Monday May 21

Virtual Treatments and Exercise Rooms: Boston Virtual Reality presents this night of virtual reality demonstrations and information about VR opportunities in the healthcare field. There will be a talk by Erran Orr, the founder and CEO of VR Health. This event starts at 6 p.m. and takes place at the Cambridge Innovation Center, which is located at 1 Broadway St. on the 5th floor in Cambridge.  

Tuesday May 22

How AI Will Power the Future of Voice: Machine Learning Boston hosts this free event that tackles the topic of artificial intelligence and how it works as a digital assistant application. This event begins at 5:45 p.m. and takes place at the WeWork located at 1 Beacon St. on the 15th floor. More event details can be found on the event’s Meetup page.

Hackers and Hustlers Startup and Networking Event: Hackers and Hustlers, a group devoted to bringing together who they believe to be the most important two people in every startup: the hacker and the hustler. This night will include networking and startup pitches. Pizza and drinks will be provided. This free event starts at 6 p.m. at the Wework located at 625 Massachusetts Ave. in Cambridge.

Wednesday May 23

Robotics Summit and Showcase: This two-day affair will feature keynote addresses, speakers and robotics showcases. Speakers include Marc Raibert, founder and CEO of Boston Dynamics, and John Lizzi, Executive Director of Robotics for GE Global Research, among others. This event takes place at the Westin Boston Waterfront hotel, which is located at 425 Summer St. Ticket prices vary and information can be found on the conference’s event page.

MIT Sloan Innovation Showcase: This showcase will feature panels, keynotes ,and networking. This year’s theme is all about digital. This full-day event starts at 7:30 a.m. and runs nearly 12 hours. Ticket information can be found on the event’s website. This showcase takes place at MIT Kresge, which is located at 48 Massachusetts Ave. in Cambridge.

Thursday May 24

Blockchain for Enterprises: This free event is jam packed with activities. Attendees will get to see a panel, learn about blockchain projects and share ideas freely. This event starts at 7 p.m. and the location has not been announced yet. Check back to the event’s website for more details.

Drunk User Testing: Appcues hosts this night of beta testing for startups. Attendees will be served food and drink and will have the ability to test out a bunch of new tech. Tickets are $8 and you can join the waitlist. The event begins at 6 p.m. and takes place at Wistia, which is located at 17 Tudor St. in Cambridge.

Week 5

Wednesday May 30

Intro To The Boston Startup Community: General Assembly hosts this free event to serve as an orientation for newcomers to the Boston startup scene. This event includes a panel that will cover the local VCs, startup events to attend, incubator information and more. This event is at 6:30 p.m. at General Assembly, which is located at 125 Summer St. on the 13th floor.
