The JFK Presidential Library and museum has released a never-before-seen series of clips from a Kennedy family vacation in the summer of 1963. The color footage offers a jovial 15-minute look into the summer that was President Kennedy’s last.
In the video, John F. Kennedy is on vacation with a pregnant Jackie Kennedy and their young children: Caroline Kennedy and son John F. Kennedy, Jr. In Hyannis Port, the president can be seen golfing with various political officials and swimming in the ocean off the presidential yacht with his family. CBS notes that less than two weeks after the film was shot, Jackie Kennedy gave premature birth to a son named Patrick, who died two days later.
President Obama recently nominated 55-year-old Caroline Kennedy (seen at age 5 in the video) to be ambassador to Japan.
According to CBS, it is unclear why the video has not been released since it was shot more than 50 years ago. It is part of the collection entitled ‘President’s Personal Pictures,’ which also includes footage from other family vacations, videos of the Kennedy children, and a video of John F. Kennedy in his twenties.
