Borussia Dortmund has already made Bundesliga history this year, blowing away the competition with a record 81 points and an unmatched 28-game unbeaten streak. In second place with 73 points is their opponent in today’s match, Bayern Munich.
If Borussia Dortmund win in Berlin today, they will capture their first league and cup double. Dortmund’s manager Jurgen Klopp is confident his side will prevail.
“We have got to seize this opportunity. We have an extraordinary team and we are really motivated, and after 103 years I think that, to be honest, our time has come,” Klopp told a press conference yesterday.
Adding to Dortmund’s motivation is the fact that they have already beaten Bayern Munich four times this year. If they are able to win today it will set a record for most wins against the Bavarians in a season.
“This is the most extraordinary game in German football,” Klopp said. “We will play tomorrow as if we were in Wembley, or even Wimbledon, or whatever.”
Bayern, who have earned their way into the Champions League Final against Chelsea on May 19th, are stuck in a tough position. If they lose today and lose in the Champions League, they will walk away from the season empty-handed. But, if they go for the win today, they risk injury to their players just a week before the biggest game in European soccer.
According to ESPN, both teams are healthy:
Both teams have strong squads to choose from, with Bayern expecting defenders Daniel van Buyten and Breno to link up with the side in the capital on Saturday after testing their fitness levels in a reserve team fixture on Friday night. Patrick Owomoyela is the only player unavailable for Klopp.
