Both sides honored the Hillsborough 96 ahead of the match, Evra and Suarez went through with the pregame handshake, and Liverpool were looking for their first win of the season. Liverpool outplayed Man Utd for the majority of the match, despite losing Shelvey in the 41st minute, but in the end the Reds fell to United 2-1. Take a look at the Liverpool v Manchester United highlights below.
Liverpool v Manchester United Highlights [VIDEO]
The Reds controlled the match from the first whistle, pressuring United’s back line, swarming their midfield and stifling their offense. It was 25 minutes before United even made it into Liverpool’s half.
After all that dominance, though, Jonjo Shelvey shot his team in the foot in the 39th minute when he got too eager with a tackle on Ryan Giggs and followed it with an ill-advised two footed tackle on Johnny Evans. Had the timing on the Evans tackle gone the other way, it could’ve been the United man getting the red card, but it was Shelvey to be sent off.
Despite going down a man, Liverpool went ahead when Steven Gerrard side volleyed a loose ball past Lindegaard just a minute into the second half. Their lead didn’t last 5 minutes, however. Rafael spun a left footed shot inside the box that pinged off the left post and leveled the score.
Down a man and undoubtedly upset with the scoreline, Liverpool remained the better side. They tested Lindegaard on a number of occasions, but couldn’t find the back of the net.
They were unfortunate again in the 76th minute when Valencia went down easily inside the box and earned a spot kick. All pressure was on RVP after United missed three penalties in each of their last three matches. Finally, he found the back of the net.
Liverpool played far better football and were unfortunate to lose the match. United will need to evaluate their play. They are missing their potential.
