Georgetown has been one and done the past two years in the tournament and the Bruins will hope to make it three early outs in a row for the Hoyas. It won’t be easy. Georgetown is favored in this matchup and the Bruins haven’t “slayed any giants,” according to NCAA.com, coming close by almost beating Duke in 2008.
CBS points out that unfortunately for Belmont, they play right into the strengths of their Georgetown foes:
No team in the country holds teams to a worse percentage from 3-point range than Georgetown (26.3 percent). That strength comes in handy against Belmont, who shoots 23 3-pointers per game. “That’s one thing Coach has been stressing all this week at practice is defending the 3-point line,” Jason Clark said. “So we have been doing a lot of closeout drills.”
The Bruins are already underdogs. They’ll be even bigger underdogs considering that the Hoyas specifically do well in defending what the Bruins try to do offensively. It should be an interesting matchup either way.
The winner of this game will advance to play the winner of the North Carolina State vs. San Diego State game in the Midwest bracket. Of those four teams, the last standing will likely have to go through the impressive Kansas squad.
