Over the weekend, 28 teams of local students, professionals, and entrepreneurs battled it out in the MassDiGi Game Challenge for prizes and resources valued at over $25,000. The event was held in Cambridge, Mass at Microsoft’s NERD Center.

In the end, the coveted Grand Prize Winner and Best Game Concept Award went to the the developers at 80HD Games (pictured) for “Nano Swarm.”

Here’s what they won:

  • Full access to a MassDiGi 2012 Summer Innovation Program (SIP) team (valued at $20,000)
  • $6,000 worth of legal services from Morse, Barnes-Brown, Pendleton PC
  • Access to award-winning industry mentors
  • A cash award
  • Other prizes

“The Game Challenge has provided young, aspiring talent access to over 20 experienced industry professionals giving them a leg up in the dynamic games industry,” said Managing Director of MassDiGI, Monty Sharma, in the press release.

The MassDiGi Summer Innovation Program and the various resources that 80HD Games won will give the team “a leg up in the dynamic games industry” that will allow them to “polish their game and get it ready for launch.”

Other winners of the competition’s awards were Commotion Games for the Best Game Prototype, USB for the Best Serious Game Concept or Prototype, and Robot Dragon for the Wow! This Could Be Big award.

The program is another step towards building Massachusetts into the leader in game development. “As we continue to work together there will be no other state that can compete with us as we push this value proposition forward,” said MassDiGI Chair Robert Johnson via Mass HighTech.
