A new app launched on October 20th looks to give MBTA riders real-time scheduling and alert data.
ProximiT will show riders train arrival times for nearby stations while the app is open. When “outside” the app, notifications (arrival times, service alerts) will be sent every time a “favorite” MBTA station is within a block.
The goal of designers Jeff Lopes and Randall Dailey — both formally of Microsoft and currently at Localytics — is “just by glancing at the phone, and with minimal intrusiveness, you can know if you need to hurry, if you have time to go grab that coffee, or if you need to grab an Uber because MBTA service is interrupted.”
ProximiT is available on iTunes and requires iOS 6.0 or later. It is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, and has been optimized for iPhone 5. A text download is also available here.
Unfortunately, Green Line support (obviously) is not available because real-time data can not be collected from the service.
