While hunting for a reference for another article, I got lost in looking at maps of Boston at various points in history. Thought I’d share some of these gems. Enjoy!

1722 (original source) – close up on how Boston proper looked in the colonial era. Check out the prevalence of Commonwealth Ave.

1775 (original source) – back when Back Bay was, you know, a bay.

1800 (original source) – similar era to the one above, but look at the detail to the islands around Boston.

1872 (original source) – detailed street map of Downtown Crossing, the Ladder district and the Financial District. Almost all of the streets are identical.
