During the Patriots’ week off, sophomore tight end Rob Gronkowski returned to Arizona, where he played his college ball, to visit some friends.

But that wasn’t the only visit that he made.

A couple of pictures of Gronkowski with adult film star BiBi Jones popped up on the actress’ Twitter handle over the weekend, both of which feature Gronkowski’s jersey worn by the lady and not the man. In one of the pictures, Gronkowski also has his shirt off.

Jones appeared on 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Toucher and Rich program this morning to discuss their time together, calling Gronkowski “very polite” and “such a gentleman.”

According to Jones, the two had never met before.

She also said that Gronkowski keeps a spare jersey around in case he meets someone famous…or infamous, as it were.

The two tweets from Jones proved controversial, but only because they came at a time in which there was absolutely nothing else happening in the Boston sports scene. The Bruins played Saturday night and don’t play again until Thursday, the Patriots were on a bye and the Celtics still don’t have a clue when or if they’ll begin their 2011-12 season.

Even the Red Sox drama has slowed down after the team finally announced on Friday night that Theo Epstein is joining the Cubs, with a press conference to be held on Tuesday.

Will anything come of the pictures? It’s unlikely; Gronk is 22, single and one of the more successful athletes in today’s NFL. He has every right to do with his time off what he chooses to.

That said, I’d have felt better – and I think we all would, really – had he gone after Rihanna or Kate Upton, whom he’s tried to court via Twitter in the past.

One way or the other, it’s fairly safe to say that Gronkowski is the new favorite to run around town like Brad Marchand did last summer if the Patriots win a Super Bowl any time soon.

UPDATE: Gronkowski apologized for the pictures, saying that they weren’t meant “to hurt the reputation of anyone on the New England Patriots or on behalf of Robert Kraft,” and that it was “just a simple picture, that’s all. From here on out, I’m just here to talk about the Pittsburgh Steelers and the big game this weekend.”

Gronkowski played his senior year of high school in the Pittsburgh area, and had three touchdown catches against the Steelers last year.

The pictures were said by many to not merit an apology, but it’s likely that Gronkowski had a chat with Patriots owner Robert Kraft or Head Coach Bill Belichick, who frown upon such excessive behavior. Remember, it was Belichick who last year benched Wes Welker at the start of the Patriots’ playoff loss to the New York Jets after Welker took numerous jabs at Jets’ head coach Rex Ryan during the week leading up to the game.
