First Off

Lucy: Welcome back to another edition of The Beat, folks. We’d love to see you at our Startups to Watch event on February 7. We’ll be announcing our panelists shortly, but I can tell you: You don’t want to miss this one. Grab tickets and secure your spot here.

Let’s drop a Beat now.

The Big One

A breakdown on the day’s biggest Inno story.

Sri: “Spectroscopy” is defined as “the study of the interaction between matter and electromagnetic radiation.” Simply put, spectroscopy – as we understand it today, is the study of visible light dispersed according to its wavelength, by a prism.

Where can this be used? Typically, scientists use spectroscopy to study atoms and molecules; astronomers use it for remote sensing of the Earth’s surface. But MIT startup Labby Inc. has found an unusual application: testing the quality of milk and wine.

In quality control, it works like this: Spectroscopic analyzers send a beam of light through a material – in this case, milk or wine. The light interacts with the liquid and sends signals to a receiver, which compares it to a precalibrated reference sample for testing quality.

This method isn’t new; it’s widely used in food packaging and manufacturing. What Labby is trying to do is take this technology to the dairy farms or vineyards that appear early in the supply chain.

Making Moves

Inside the people, companies and organizations making moves in Boston.

Lucy: Starbucks is expanding its “Starbucks Delivers” pilot to six more cities across the U.S.—and one of them is Boston. The food and beverage retailer is partnering with meal delivery service Uber Eats to bring its lattes, sandwiches and dark-roasted coffee cups directly to customers through the Uber Eats mobile app. In Boston, the service will begin operations in select stores “in the coming weeks,” with the final goal of being available in seven U.S. cities this spring. Read more: Starbucks to Expand Delivery Service via Uber Eats to Boston

Sri: Unicorn and more: Boston-based 3D printing startup Desktop Metal is raising its Series E round worth $150M, which puts the company’s valuation at $1.5B, according to Axios. Desktop Metal has raised over $250M in venture capital so far.

Lucy: New #OfficeEnvy alert: Workable, a recruiting software platform that raised $50M in November 2018, moved its local outpost to a new location in the Financial District neighborhood of Boston in the summer of last year. The new, 23,000-square-foot space is home to 64 employees, but it expects to grow its headcount over the next few months. Fun fact: Being that the company was born in Greece, the office keeps a full stack of Greek yogurt in a dedicated fridge. Read more: Office Envy: Inside the New Office of Workable in the Financial District

In The Community

The events and happenings to know about tonight and this week.

Sri: Interested in the future of cannabis in MA? Head over to CIC Boston for a networking event and panel discussion moderated by yours truly. “Cannabis is quickly advancing in both medicinal and leisure markets and some experts predict cannabis will develop into a craft industry similar to microbreweries and craft distilleries. Many options for infused food, drink, and personal care products made with cannabis derivatives like CBD and hemp are just the beginning. With so much innovation underway, 2019 will surely be the biggest year yet for industry development and maturation.” Details here.

Lucy: Opportunity alert. Applications for UFirst, an early-stage summer accelerator program powered by Underscore VC, are now open. Each UFirst Fellow will be provided with personalized mentorship, access, and programming. Deadline to keep in mind: March 4th. More here.

Random

The fun stuff.

Lucy: This is the first thing that I read on my phone this morning. The list of Oscar nominations is out and here’s what you need to know: ‘Roma’ and ‘The Favourite’ lead nominations with 10 each, Lady Gaga is nominated as best actress in a leading role and ‘Black Panther’ is the first superhero movie to be nominated for best picture. Also, Netflix made headlines: the streaming service received its first-ever nomination for best picture (‘Roma,’ again). The 91st Academy Awards Night is Sunday, Feb. 24. Here’s the full list of nominations—As I said before, I’m rooting for the one and only Viggo Mortensen.
