High atop Weihenstephan Hill in the Bavarian city of Freising sits the oldest existing brewery in the world, established in 1040. Weihenstephan Brewery, as its known, is a mid-sized company operating on the craft credo of “class not mass”–a philosophy that’s produced innumerable awards and global recognition for their myriad offerings. A visit to the exalted site would be a beer buff’s trip of a lifetime, no doubt. But lucky for us, the brewery is bringing 10 of its best beers to Somerville.

At Olde Magoun’s Saloon, 518 Medford St., the legendary brewery is staging a Tap Takeover, featuring 10 of their savory suds during the month of February. During the first two Fridays of the month, beginning tomorrow, Magoun’s will also be offering beer tasting events, giving patrons the opportunity to sample each of the famous beers on tap: Vitus, Pilsner, Hefe-Weissbier, Hefe-Weissbier Dunkel, Korbinian, Kristall Weissbier, Original Lager, Marzen, and special editions White Hoplosion and Fresh Hops Finest.

“Weinhenstephan is recognized as one of the most regarded breweries in the world,” Greg Coughlin, owner of Olde Magoun’s Saloon, told me recently. “February would not be the most exciting month for beer so I was trying to come up with an idea that our customers might really enjoy. I decided on having a Tap Takeover for the month by Weihenstephan [because] all their beer styles are in the top percentile of their specific categories.”

Coughlin deserves credit for promoting an atmosphere where “we are always trying to come up with fun and unique ideas for our customers.” And while I certainly applaud their January theme–an epicurean adventure featuring bacon on the menu every Wednesday–I can’t wait to stop by in February to sample beers from a brewery that’s been in the game longer than anyone else around.

As an added bonus, Coughlin told me that Weihenstephan has been making a concerted effort to both supply more Americans with their traditional wares as well as to brew limited edition styles tailored specifically for the American palate, such as White Hoplosion and Fresh Hops Finest.

More information about the Tap Takeover can be found here. I’ll be the guy at the bar surrounded by 10 empty glasses.
