When it comes to soft drinks, every region of the U.S. has their own word for the fizzy drink. Some folks out there call it “pop” while others simply say “soda.” I can tell you that in the South, all soda is referred to as “Coke.” But maybe that’s because our favorite soda is actually Coca-Cola.

And speaking of favorite sodas, Thrillist recently compiled each state’s most iconic soft drink into this map (above). As you can see, Georgia clearly loves Coke with a passion (no surprise) and Dr. Pepper reigns supreme in Texas. As for Massachusetts, it looks like we go nuts for Polar.

That’s right. According to Thrillist, “Bay Staters are crazy for Polar,” which is bottled in Worcester. I will say that the soda drink is ubiquitous in Boston. Whether you’re at work or on the T, you’re sure to see someone drinking one of their uniquely flavored sodas or seltzer waters.

What you might not know is that Polar Beverages is actually the “country’s largest independent soft-drink bottler,” according to their site. The company can also trace its roots back to the 1800’s when it began as a bottler of ginger ale and seltzers.

Obviously, a lot has changed over the years. Polar is certainly one of the most popular (if not, the most popular) soda brand in Massachusetts – and given their recent expansion into the South with the acquisition of the Winn-Dixie Deep South Beverage Manufacturing, I’d say they’re poised to dominate in other regions. That is – if they can compete with the Cokes and Pepsi’s of the world.

One thing’s for sure – Polar isn’t going anywhere in Massachusetts anytime soon. Check here to see the 49 other most iconic soft drinks in the country.
