Here in Boston, we’ve grown used to the tap-tap luxury of Uber. The ride service and taxi-hailing app gives us a reprieve from taking the T when it’s too cold, and provides much-needed options in avoiding the 2 a.m. jostle to catch a cab with UberX and black car alternatives. Uber helps us get home in a pinch – even if sometimes you might have to deal with the soar of surge pricing. (Hey, at least you’ve been warned.)

And now, the success of Uber in Boston has led the company to send its service outside the city, benefitting non-city dwellers who could also benefit from the seamless ride service. Thursday, Uber announced its expansion to the North Shore, kicking off the newly added coverage with two local celebrity riders: the Bruins’ Ray Bourque and Milan Lucic, North Shore residents who served as Uber’s inaugural “Rider Zeroes” for the expansion.

The two hockey stars will also be donating $10 for every new North Shore Uber user to their charity Celebrities for Charity. See them take their first ride and announce the donations in the video below:

And if you are one of Uber’s new North Shore riders, you have some perks coming your way. New users will be awarded two free rides (up to $40 each, not valid with “taxi” service) if they sign up between today and February 6th at 5 p.m. and use the code ‘UberNorthShore.’ If you’re not a new user, you can still get in on the $40 action. Just enter the code ‘NorthShoreLove’ for one free ride up to $40, not including taxi service, to or from the North Shore.

The expansion will cover a range of North Shore areas such as Lynn, Reading, Wakefield, Andover, Topsfield, Salem and Gloucester. To see the complete area of coverage, click here.

In addition to the free credits for signing up, North Shore residents will also enjoy some benefits at their local stores and restaurants. To celebrate the expansion, Uber has teamed up with local businesses for discounts and complimentary apps and ‘zerts. All you have to do is show your Uber receipt, and you can get:

  • Maison Esthetique – 15 percent off facial treatment
  • Plum Consignment – 20 percent off your in-store purchase
  • Braccia’s Four66 Pub and Grill – Complimentary appetizer
  • Casa de Luis – Free appetizer with purchase of two entrees
  • Pellana Restaurant – Complimentary dessert with dinner
  • G Bar and Kitchen – Complimentary appetizer with dinner
  • The Landing & 7 Central – Free cup of award-winning clam chowder

Not a bad deal just for using Uber. So, North Shore residents, rejoice – your Uber is arriving now.
