An enraged Westborough man took his revenge to the next level when he reportedly locked a Verizon worker in an underground vault after the worker parked his van on the businessman’s grass.

71 year-old Howard Cook, owner of Westboro Self Storage, is facing serious charges, including kidnapping, for instigating the act. While Verizon employee Mike Hathaway was working inside of the underground vault, Cook allegedly removed the vault’s escape ladder, slammed the hatch, and placed heavy rocks on top of it, trapping Hathaway inside.

It wasn’t only the dark Hathaway had to contend with in the vault, either. “When the hatch was closed, it didn’t allow for any more oxygen to get in, so it was time sensitive to get to him,” said Westborough Police Sgt. Jonathan Kalagher. Fortunately, Hathaway was able to call 911 on his cell phone from inside of the vault and police came quickly to free him.

Take note: the next time you consider parking your car on someone’s lawn, you better make sure the area is far from any underground chambers or you could find yourself inside of one.
