As companies across Chicago look to hire top tech talent, a new study looks at the local businesses that are most attractive to Chicago technologists.

Hired, a career marketplace for tech workers, set out to identify the most attractive companies in tech in each of the cities where it operates. The company surveyed tech workers in software engineering, product management, design, and data science roles to find out what companies they were most interested in working for.

Here are the top 10 companies where Chicago techies want to work the most, according to Hired.

  1. Boeing
  2. Grubhub
  3. Sprout Social
  4. Peapod
  5. Trunk Club
  6. Uptake
  7. Groupon
  8. Fooda
  9. Avant
  10. Cars.com

The list is a measure of “brand positivity,” in other words how much a job candidate values a given workplace. It’s certainly a subjective measurement, but it gives a sense of how Chicago companies are viewed by a sample of the local workforce. Boeing, which relocated its headquarters from Seattle to Chicago in 2001, took the top spot.

“While Boeing is not a new company in the tech scene, recent forward-thinking investments may help explain why it ranks number one on Chicago’s top employer brand list,” the Hired report states. “This month it was reported that the company is set to acquire longtime partner Aurora Flight Sciences, a company working with Uber to develop autonomous aircraft the tech giant could one day operate as air taxis.”

Hired’s report also included some potentially troubling information for Chicago tech hiring. More than 80% of Chicago respondents said they would consider working somewhere outside of Chicago, which was “substantially more” than other surveyed markets, Hired found.

“This might mean that Chicago could see an exodus of experienced technology talent over the coming years,” the report said.
