New Money is a roundup of all the funding deals raised by Chicago-area tech companies this week. As more news comes out, this post will be updated.
Deal: $22 million Series B
Investors: The round was led by Renren Inc. with participation from Chicago Ventures, DRW Venture Capital, GGV Capital, Garland Capital Group, KGC Capital, Pritzker Group, Wicklow Capital, and individual investors Fabrice Grinda and Match.com CEO Sam Yagan.
What they do: Shiftgig is a platform for businesses to fill and manage short term job assignments, and it gives people looking for work the option to choose from thousands of available shifts at local companies. The company says last month the Shiftgig marketplace generated over 15,000 shifts worked in major US cities. And in the last six months, Shiftgig has expanded into five new cities and the number of monthly shifts worked has more than tripled.
Other details: Shiftgig recently went through an apparent rebrand, as it previously served as an online marketplace for bartenders, servers and other restaurant industry shift workers. It has now opened up the number of industries included on its platform to induce retail warehouse, hotel, and sports stadium gigs. Shiftgig raised $10 million last year.
