Office Envy: A Look Inside RXBAR’s Glossy River North Office Building

After being acquired by breakfast and snack food conglomerate Kellogg for $600 million last year, Chicago-based protein bar maker RXBAR decided it was time for an office upgrade.

So earlier this year, the RXBAR team moved a few blocks over in River North to a new nine-story building at 412 N. Wells St. for a 10-year lease. How much RXBAR is leasing the building for is unknown, but a Spanish investor is paying more than $31 million for it, making it the most expensive office building per square foot in Chicago, according to Crain's.

RXBAR, founded in 2013 by Peter Rahal in his parent’s basement out in the Chicago suburbs, makes protein bars that only contain four main ingredients: egg whites, almonds, cashews and dates. In the past year, RXBAR grew to more than 200 employees, but recently cut its staff by 20 percent when it laid off 40 employees.

The company's new office building was designed by Harken Interiors, which chose the decor based on the company’s recognizable graphic identity. With accent walls and carpets, and graphics in the stairwell, the decor reflects RXBAR’s color palette seen on the bright packaging of its bars.

The modern interior has no enclosed offices and conference rooms are named after significant people or milestones in the company’s history. Employees have sit-stand desks, and access to kombucha and cold brew on tap. The office also has its own fitness center and a rooftop lounge that features panoramic views of River North.
