According to a new study by RJMetrics, the number of data scientists has doubled over the last 4 years, with more than  11,000 data scientists currently employed by companies around the world.

Data science–which is the act of extracting insights from large data sets utilizing work from fields like statistics, predictive analytics, and data mining–is a term that has existed for over 30 years. But Forbes says it was Jeffrey Hammerbacher and DJ Patil who were responsible for coining the job title “data scientists” after they each led the data science efforts at Facebook and LinkedIn respectively.

Dubbed the sexiest job of the 21st century by the Harvard Business Review, data scientists have played an increasingly important role in Silicon Valley and companies across the glob. RJMetrics found that there are 11,400 data scientists working today, with Microsoft holding the greatest number of jobs with 227 data scientists on board.

In the Chicago area, three companies cracked the list of the 50 businesses with the largest number of data scientists. Groupon has 38, Allstate has 36, and Civis Analytics has 19 according to RJMetrics, which looked at people who identified themselves as data scientists on LinkedIn.
