D.C. is known for being host to some odd relationships and somewhat salacious couples, but the city’s most recent high-profile pairing has to be one of the more attention-grabbing romances of the year: According to a report from the Washington Post’s Reliable Sources blog, former D.C. mayor Adrian Fenty is dating Laurene Powell Jobs, Steve Jobs’ billionaire widow.
Fenty has been on the West Coast for the past few months, having started a new position within the Silicon Valley venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz as a political consultant and advisor. Fenty is said to have met Jobs at a Houston education conference in 2011, and the two connected over their similar passion for education reform and overhauling public schools (one of the bigger legacies of Fenty’s stint as D.C. mayor).
In February 2012, Fenty was invited to join the board of Jobs’ non-profit college prep program, an appointment which actually led to his eventual hiring at Andreessen Horowitz. Fenty formally separated with his wife earlier this year in January, which is when the relationship between himself and Jobs apparently began to start, moving from a strong friendship into a more serious romantic relationship.
Jobs has done an exceptional job of staying out of the public eye (something her late husband wasn’t exactly known for), but at age 49, she’s one of the country’s most prolific philanthropists and a founder of numerous non-profits and organizations for social reform. After her husband’s passing in October 2011, it’s estimated that Jobs is worth $10 billion which easily makes her one of the richest women in the country.
Needless to say, it’ll be interesting to see where this relationship goes.
