Much like Filene’s Basement did in May 2009, Loehmann’s filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in December 2013. That news is bittersweet, as the discount retailer will soon shutter its doors after 93 years of business, but the stores in Friendship Heights, Falls Church and Rockville are unloading their already-reduced merchandise with additional discounts over the next couple of days.

The official last day of the going-out-of-business sale is March 31, though stores may close before then depending on how quickly the goods are bought up.

All Loehmann’s locations are hit-or-miss for shopping, sometimes carrying a plethora of Theory, BCBG, Calvin Klein, Cole Haan, Free People, and other high-end brands for 40 to 60 percent off, and sometimes it’s a little more picked through. With an insane ongoing sale that’s already kicked off, it would be a good idea to hit up Loehmann’s sooner rather than later to take full advantage of the sale. (Otherwise, chances are, you’ll be left with a bunch of stockings and dated jewelry.)

With Filene’s also gone, Washingtonian discount shoppers are now left with Nordstrom Rack and few other options. There are a lot of wonderful second-hand retailers, though, which are nice if you don’t mind something that’s already been worn.

Then, of course, there is the Internet, which is one of the reasons as to why these stores aren’t doing well anymore. It’s just better economics for a store to operate online, where they don’t have to worry about staffing employees and rent, besides the people in charge of shipping the merchandise.

But, as Refinery29 D.C. Editor Holly Thomas said, “It’s hard to fall in love with a garment online.” It is easy, however, to fall in love with a designer jacket that’s 80 percent off.

We will miss you, Loehmann’s.

Loehmann’s stores in the D.C. area are located in:

  • Friendship Heights, at 5333 Wisconsin Ave. NW.,
  • Falls Church, at 7271 Arlington Blvd., and
  • Rockville, at 5230 Randolf Rd.
