James Holmes, 24, has been identified as the suspect in the killing of 12 people during a Dark Knight Rises premiere at a theater in Aurora, Colorado, now being called the Theater Shooting. James Holmes, who stunned then opened fire on the helpless crowd, has been apprehended. The FBI announced that they have over 100 officers at the cinema and Holmes’ apartment, where he claims to have a cache of explosives. We will update this piece as more information on the devastating event unfolds.

24 year old white male, James Holmes, who has no previous record, was identified as the suspect. Holmes was apprehended by police in the rear of the theater and his motive remains unclear.

“He did not resist. He did not put up a fight,” Fania said. Police seized a rifle and a handgun from the suspect, and another gun was found in the theater, he said.

Police spokesman Frank Fania said that Holmes was heavily armed and wearing a bulletproof vest and a mask as he kicked in the emergency door of the Aurora, Colorado theater, employed tear gas to disorient the crowd, then opened fire.

“We were maybe 20 or 30 minutes into the movie and all you hear, first you smell smoke, everybody thought it was fireworks or something like that, and then you just see people dropping and the gunshots are constant,” witness Christ Jones told ABC’s Denver affiliate KMGH. “I heard at least 20 to 30 rounds within that minute or two.”

Police Chief Dan Oates said the explosive devices were “pretty sophisticated.”

“We could be here for days,” he added.
