Yesterday’s shooting at the Washington Navy Yard claimed the lives of 13 people, including the gunman and wounded another 14.  The gunman has been identified as 34-year-old Aaron Alexis of Ft. Worth who had moved to the Washington area to work as a military subcontractor.  Police had originally sought two other possible shooters, though they now believe that Alexis acted alone.  So far there is no known motive for the shooting.

Officials have released the names of 8 victims of the attack:

  • Michael Arnold
  • Arthur Daniels
  • Sylvia Frasier
  • Kathleen Gaarde
  • John Roger Johnson
  • Frank Kohler
  • Vishnu Pandit
  • Kenneth Bernard Proctor

A vigil was held for victims of the shooting last night in Freedom Plaza in Northwest D.C.  Washington Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton has said that she would hold a moment of silence in Congress when they convened today and President Obama ordered flags to fly at half-mast until sundown Friday.
